But after spending a few months living in Fort Dodge, we kept stumbling across places that didn’t fit that stereotype. One day we were eating avocado toast in a trendy café. The next we were drinking local wine or learning to use chopsticks at a family-owned Korean restaurant.

1. Stella’s Coffee Bar

If someone dropped us here blindfolded, we’d guess we were in Minneapolis or Kansas City—not Fort Dodge.

Stella’s started as a tiny coffee camper before growing into one of the city’s favorite gathering spots.

What to order:

• Avocado toast
• Hot honey bagel with scallion cream cheese
• Homemade Pop-Tart

Our take:

The avocado toast is simple but perfectly executed with crispy bread, creamy avocado, pickled onions, and tomato.

But the surprise favorite was the hot honey bagel. The sweet heat with rich scallion cream cheese somehow works perfectly.

2. Rides Bar & Grill

Every small Midwestern town deserves a great burger joint.

Fort Dodge has Rides.

The car-themed restaurant serves fresh, never-frozen burgers that have earned local awards and a loyal following.

What to order:

• Soft Tail burger
• Meat Wagon challenge burger

Our take:

The Soft Tail proves they don’t need gimmicks.

Juicy beef, perfectly cooked, and everything you want from a classic American burger.

The Meat Wagon?

Let’s just say four patties and enough bacon to feed a family feels like America in the best possible way.

3. The Dariette

Some places instantly make you nostalgic, even if you’ve never been there before.

The Dariette has been serving Fort Dodge since the 1940s and still feels like the classic neighborhood ice cream stand every town wishes it had.

What to order:

• Lemon custard
• Cherry sorbet

Our take:

The lemon custard tasted like a frozen lemon bar—bright, creamy, and unbelievably refreshing.

It’s exactly the kind of local institution that keeps people coming back generation after generation.

4. Pinch of Love Café

This might have been our biggest surprise.

Hidden inside what looks like a regular neighborhood house is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants in Fort Dodge Iowa.

Run by two sisters, the restaurant was inspired by their aunt’s cooking and the reminder to always add “a pinch of love.”

What to order:

• Taco sampler platter

Our take:

The birria tacos were outstanding.

Tender beef, crispy cheese-filled tortillas, and rich consommé made this feel like something we’d happily order again and again.

If we closed our eyes, we never would have guessed we were eating tacos in Iowa.

5. Soldier Creek Winery

Yes…

A winery in Fort Dodge.

And yes…

It’s actually really good.

After a fire ended the family’s hog farming business, they reinvented the property into a winery that now produces wines, cider, and hosts live music on weekends.

What to try:

• Wine flight
• Ghost Pig cider
• Charcuterie box

Our take:

The cider was crisp and refreshing, but the biggest surprise was the red wine.

I’m not usually a red wine person, yet this one was light, approachable, and incredibly drinkable.

6. GAGA & HOO Korean Restaurant

If there’s one restaurant that completely changed our perception of Fort Dodge’s food scene, it’s this one.

GAGA & HOO intentionally built a menu that welcomes first-time Korean food eaters while staying true to its roots.

What to order:

• Galbi (short ribs)
• Seafood scallion pancake
• Sweet and sour chicken
• Soju

Our take:

The food was fantastic, but what we’ll remember most is the experience.

What started as dinner turned into three hours of learning about Korean food, laughing over chopstick lessons, and sharing stories with people we’d just met.

That’s something you can’t manufacture.

Final Thoughts

Before living here, we thought we already knew what a small Iowa food scene looked like.

Burgers.
Ice cream.
Comfort food.

And while you’ll absolutely find those classics, you’ll also discover trendy coffee shops, incredible tacos, local wineries, and Korean restaurants worth driving an hour for.

That’s what surprised us most.

The best restaurants in Fort Dodge Iowa aren’t trying to be the next big food destination.

They’re simply run by passionate people creating something special for their community—and that made every meal memorable.
